SEATTLE (AP) — When 86-year-old Edith Macefield refused a $1 million offer to move from her Seattle home, a developer started building a five-story project around it.

Macefield said that she doesn’t need the money and that she doesn’t want to move from her home, where she has lived since 1966. A concrete wall looms within feet of her kitchen window as the project rises.

Macefield’s 108-year-old house is the last home on the block near the Ballard bridge.Macefield said that she doesn’t mind the noise of the construction site.

Construction workers watch out for Macefield, particularly superintendent Barry Martin who says it’s like having your grandmother around.

More power to her! We have a lady like that here – back when the land where my uni (college) is currently located was being bought up in order so that the uni could be expanded, everyone sold up except her…so she is now almost dead centre of the campus! Very lovely little old lady, I think she’s in her 70s! We can often spot her sitting on her balcony with a cup of tea and a cigarette watching the hoards of students pass her little Victorian house :) Apparently she often invites students in for a cuppa to say hallo too!

  3. I just took the remaining two bandages off (index finger and thumb)…they’re maddeningly itchy and fingerprint-less and swollen, but not painful :D If I were a more motivated person, I would take this brief period of fingerprint-less-ness and go off to commit my crime of a lifetime :P
